Why London Design Festival Must Embrace Climate-Conscious Design: Time to Stop Business as Usual
As the London Design Festival (LDF) concludes for another year, it’s hard not to feel a sense of disappointment. In 2024, a pivotal industry like design should be making a full shift toward sustainable practices, yet much of LDF seems to carry on with business as usual. With climate change an ever-pressing issue, it’s crucial that large-scale events like LDF take responsibility for addressing sustainability, especially given the significant environmental impact — from material sourcing to waste generation.
While some exhibitors, such as those at Material Matters, focused on sustainable solutions, & we enjoyed the installation ‘The Sun, My Heart’ by Marjan van Aubel, much of the festival still emphasises conventional design trends, luxury goods, and non-sustainable materials. Installations are still being built and dismantled in a matter of days, which feels increasingly out of touch. Future installations should follow the example of the diverse community-focused project ‘Under Construction by Takeshi Hayatsu & Collaborators‘ at the Stanley Picker Gallery, a collaborative project running for several months — a far more sustainable timescale.

This business-as-usual attitude raises important questions: Is LDF missing an opportunity to lead the charge in promoting ethical design solutions? Why isn’t climate action at the forefront of every conversation, exhibition, and product launch?
LDF attracts a global audience of designers, architects, and brands, offering a platform to inspire meaningful change. By not prioritising the climate emergency, LDF risks appearing disconnected from the urgent challenges the world faces. Design Exchange believes festivals like LDF should prioritise the planet’s future as a core requirement for participation, featuring all workshops and exhibitions. In a world facing escalating environmental challenges and dwindling resources, sustainability can no longer be treated as an option. It’s time for LDF to fully embrace its responsibility as a catalyst for meaningful change in the design industry.
