Rewilding Pioneers
The Knepp Estate in West Sussex UK is a pioneering example of rewilding transforming once intensively farmed land into a thriving natural ecosystem. Since the early 2000s Knepp’s owners Sir Charles Burrell and Isabella Tree have allowed nature to take the lead replacing conventional agriculture with free-roaming grazing animals such as Tamworth pigs longhorn cattle red deer and Exmoor ponies.
Compulsory Solar On New-build Homes Big Win Says CPRE
Responding to the government’s announcement that rooftop solar panels will become compulsory on new-build homes CPRE chief executive Roger Mortlock said:
‘This is positive step and shows that taking climate action doesn’t have to come at the expense of a thriving countryside. CPRE has long campaigned for rooftop solar panels to be made compulsory on all new-build homes. The UK’s millions of roofs have the potential to generate huge amounts of cheap and sustainable energy slash people’s bills and ensure we make the best use of our finite supply of land.
Stokey Energy Sparking Local Change
Stokey Energy is a forward-thinking organisation dedicated to promoting local sustainable and renewable energy solutions.
One of Stokey Energy’s primary goal is to make renewable energy accessible and affordable for all. By focusing on community-based projects they aim to empower schools community centers and other public buildings to transition to sustainable energy sources.
Powering Communities: The £40M Energy Catalyst
The Thrive Renewables and Better Society Capital have launched the £40 million Community Energy Catalyst initiative to support community-owned renewable energy projects across the UK. This joint venture aims to empower local communities to develop their own clean energy infrastructure or invest in larger regional schemes fostering energy independence and resilience.
The initiative will provide investments ranging from £500000 to £30 million for projects of at least 1MW capacity utilizing proven technologies such as onshore and offshore wind solar PV and hydroelectric power. Funding will target late-stage development projects that have secured planning consent facilitating their progression through construction and operation.
Bison reintroduction for rewilding
Bison are incredible ecosystem engineers enhancing biodiversity through behaviors such as dust bathing trampling debarking and seed dispersal.
Wilder Blean a groundbreaking conservation project in Kent has reintroduced European bison to the UK for the first time in 6000 years. Led by the Kent Wildlife Trust and Wildwood Trust this initiative aims to restore natural ecosystems by using bison as “ecosystem engineers.” These large herbivores help shape the landscape by grazing felling trees and creating open spaces which in turn benefits a wide range of wildlife.
Power Shift: The Countries Living the Renewable Future
Seven countries—Albania Bhutan Nepal Paraguay Iceland Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo—now generate nearly all their electricity from renewable sources with over 99.7% of their power coming from hydro geothermal solar or wind energy. This achievement demonstrates that a fully renewable electricity grid is attainable across diverse geographies and economies.
Hydropower plays a significant role in many of these nations particularly in Paraguay and the DRC while Iceland leverages its abundant geothermal resources. These countries exemplify how natural resources when harnessed sustainably can meet national energy needs.
Their success offers a blueprint for other nations aiming to transition to clean energy highlighting the importance of investing in renewable infrastructure and supportive policies.
Help Scotland become a Rewilding Nation
Scotland is positioning itself to become the world’s first “rewilding nation” by committing to restore nature across 30% of its land and seas by 2030.
This ambitious goal championed by the Scottish Rewilding Alliance and supported by public figures like Leonardo DiCaprio aims to reverse biodiversity loss and address climate challenges through large-scale habitat restoration.
