This year Orgatec’s work place trade show’s theme ‘Culture at Work’ clearly defined another step forward in the growing cross pollination of work and play made possible by technology.

Buzzwords and trends seen this show revolved around flexibility, adaptability and variety as key in daily work life/culture, along with control and customization of our personal spaces with acoustic and visual control featuring also very strongly.

We have choices as employees/professionals like never before in terms of how we work, where we work and in what precise conditions. If one environment is not right, we have progressively more and more choice to change or adapt our immediate work space to suit or the choice to choose a different environment to work, from relaxed open, eclectic, lively sociable, acoustically controlled quiet space, to exclusively ours. We are arguable living in the happiest, most balanced work environments ever; this is the time of the empowerment of the employee.

My first experience when I walked into Orgatec’s first hall was an energetic explosion of colors, from strong acid citrus yellows, scarlet, powerful sky blues, rusty and soft pinks, along with a deep rich crimsons, emotive and diverse expressions perhaps reflecting more so that ever the sense of individualism, and liberation in the work place.

Beneath the surface the trends described above can be seen in Soft Work a project by Barber Osgerby for Vitra, where the designers have created a beam sofa… defined as the possible work desk for some of the future where a desk in no longer needed. The BuzziBracks project for Buzzi Space is playful and tongue in cheek, a modular curtain track system and curtains creates domestic feel divisions of multi-use space which of course can be opened and closed at will giving a very flexible work space.

BoConcept launched themselves into the work place arena with an interesting collection and also showed a modular soft by Karim Rashid and Konig + Neurath’s selection by Architektur + Office Magazine of their single work station showed intriguing flexibility, from height adjustability, a sense of privacy and occasion which is clearly a very portable unit on wheels which could be moved around a space to suit (1), and finally Haworth (9.4) presented an interesting, texturally rich and soft work space environment, pushing their vision still further with some beautiful textiles,  strong colours and a much more relaxed look and feel generally.
