To continue with our series in asking influential architects and designers  within our community to visit the main design events and exchange their best finds with us. This time we asked designer Rock Galpin to tell us about Milan 2015. Here are his thoughts:

Moooi

Milan continues to show off heavily craft produced furniture, with a notably strong use of walnut and more exotic woods from round the world such as Sugi from Japan. These earthier materials, continue to be combined and produced showing off craftsmanship skills, showing off fixing and low tech rustic joints and fixing types. Heavy and exaggerated textile influences and craft processes such as knitting, weaving and earthy finishes are still present and continue, gaining in scale. Key trends are coming from Moroso, Moooi and Vitra this year.

The narrative of product in terms of their production but also the narrative in use, with beautiful and purposeful lifestyle compositions, from the likes of Moooi, remain a strong trend.

The other interesting new trends emerging are defined through a homage to Deco and perhaps 80’s design with Memphis, with over sized tubing, gold high polished metal, large metal strip legs, eclectic, sometimes primary colours, Memphis style patterns (Jaime Hayon installation for Mini) moving away from the softer, mid hue colours and more minimal, industrial and Scandinavian influences and aesthetics. We are moving towards a less raw and more polished, chic look and feel in furniture a more flamboyant expressive style, where functionality, form/decoration/process are becoming more disconnected from each other, in complete contrast to the existing and trend of yesterday.

In terms of style, the overall feeling is of a much more domesticated feeling, with softer, bigger textiles and squishy sofas, such as by Diesel Home and the new emerging harder more cultured lines as hints of Art Deco and the 80’s styles revival.

A time of change and transition is upon us.
