Residential building on Passatge Marimon by Mateo Arquitectura

Josep Luis Mateo designed a building that sussesfully forms a dialogue with its surroundings and the city of.  This luxury block of flats communicates with the adjacent urban fabric through its two façades, each with its own individual character. The main façade opens the building to the public as its overlooks the Passatge, and the rear façade features a more private feel while it faces the inner courtyard on the city block.

The Passatge façade is a delicate structure that faces the street; like a veil, it filters the public life through the private spaces, attempting to redefine the notion of city living and identify the boundaries between the street and the interior. This wooden structure is separated 45 cm from the façade and is made up of four different mechanisms, turning the façade into a dynamic and interactive element that responds to the dwellers’ everyday needs.

The building comprisesT four compact apartments (40-50 m2) that are situated on the two top floors. Each has an outdoor space that extends its limits, reaching out to the city while the interior is designed as a continuum, with rooms arranged around a living space that extends all the way from the front door to the façade.

Moreover, Josep Luis Mateo created a set of terraces and roofs that work as an extension of the apartments, where life evolves from the sun’s first rays to its last. ‘The building’s envelope houses the project as an interior that is experienced outwardly, transforming the way passers-by see it, with elements such as the wooden veil that opens, closes and transforms according to the people who live there.’
