Originally, the National shooting center (Deodoro Complex) was completed for the 2007 Pan-American Games, presenting facilities for  shooting, equestrian, archery, hockey and modern pentathlon . Since then, the complex has been used as a regular training center for the Brazilian Shooting Federation as well as the Brazilian military.

The building is part of a large built area of approximately 50.000m2, landscaped on a 150.000m2 site along one of the most important access vectors of the city (a hybrid of avenue and motorway).

The shooting center is situated within a  breath-taking valley that is surrounded by mountain peaks, as well as  a unique and diverse suburban context consisting of a military neighborhood, a densely populated favela, a rough industrial area and a vast wild natural setting, all mixed together.

BCMF Architects designed a simple yet extremely efficient structure that comprises a series of indoor and outdoor facilities suitable for training and competitions. The shooting center is defined by a set of outdoor wooden grids that extend from the sides of the building in order to protect the shooting range from stray bullets while they are surrounded by exposed concrete enclosures.

The internal shooting areas are lined with glazing along the rear, offering astonishing views to be relished from the inside through the connecting corridors.

The design is simple and minimal throughout the complex, yet predominately defined by aesthetic clarity.

Overall, BCMF Architects created a sports complex that features a strong linear aesthetic, bold yet refined characteristics in addition to a distinctive raw materiality, all formulating an athletic center that sets the standards for efficient and sophisticated sports architecture.
