Mayfair House by Squire and Partners

From street level the contemporary aluminium leaf façade can be seen skilfully peaking over the sites existing 18th century wall. Squire and Partners gave extended consideration to preventing the new design from dominating the local setting. The ornate wall enhanced the existing structure in the same way nature would over time, by incorporating a nature inspired façade to encase the modern additions to the site.

The exterior façade features a coverage of interpretive leaves, 4,080 to be exact. The subtle colour change in the leaves mimics that of the natural change in foliage long side merging with the colours of the old wall, conjoining the two, enriching both through enhancing the other.

Laid over five stories this lavish residential house includes a cinema and  gym  as well as a generously sized pool and five bedrooms.

The interior features mostly an calming nude colour pallet with light flowing into the building through generous skylights allowing the exterior green foliage and light to feature within the building, even in the belowground rooms which are overlooked from above.

Centred in the building is a light box of a room with greenery cascading down against the exterior glass from a higher roof terrace, cleverly incorporating the foliage with the interior space.

The two roof terraces and roof pavilion incorporate an abundance of flora and fauna contrasting the nude tones of the interior and exterior of the residence, bringing life and vibrancy to the simplistic colour pallet throughout. This also permits the building as a whole to grow with the seasons, changing colours throughout the year much like the leaves the aluminium façade is based on would.

The folded aluminium façade was inspired by a nearby house, covered in a climbing plant, another way Squire and Partners took into account the local setting of Mayfair, with extra care taken to consider the Mayfair conservation area context which was achieved with its unique contemporary yet fitting approach.
