Ciguë is an architectural practice that is quite unique; they do not only design, they ‘craft’. They are very enthusiastic regarding the conception and construction of distinctive design that is grounded on the truthfulness and richness found in natural materials. Hence the Romainville extension carries on the practice’s strong ethic and aesthetic idiosyncrasy.

The presence of materials is strong and constant but not imposing. This is a house where rooms are atmospheres and surfaces allow emotions emerge. Ciguë have captured the absolute primal essence of living; comfort, calmness and privacy. The unique material palette they have used shapes the house’s form whilst it joins together the existing structure to the newly built.

The warmth of hard oak and robustness of hard ‘douglas’ timber is juxtaposed with the coldness of brut steel and the rawness of concrete. An immaculately crafted internal staircase, made out of hard oak, dominates the space and becomes the focal point of the residence. There is also a beautiful little timber clad terrace overlooking the backyard, providing a perfect spot for isolation and reflection.
