The architects successfully engaged with the cultural and intellectual local heritage, a key design principle that inspired in the concept as well construction of the building. The Fogo Island Inn presents a rather characteristic shape which reflects some of the structures and design aesthetics found on Fogo Island and helps the building to find its place among the already stunning natural landscape.

The building barely sits on the ground as traditional style ‘shore’ legs are used to support the floors while minimizing the overall building footprint and the impact on the adjacent rocks. The legs are 50-feet high and drilled 30 feet into the ground.

Most are structural and load- bearing, even the off-angle ones by as much as seven degrees.  This unique leg structure enables the building to rise above the earth; immediately the structure becomes lighter, more elegant almost ethereal.

Moreover, the project demonstrates an exemplary environmental agenda.  Ecological and self-sustaining systems were subtly integrated from the beginning of the project and technologies were incorporated in order reduce and conserve energy and water usage.  The building also features a highly insulated steel frame and windows that have the equivalent of triple pane glazing. Rainwater from the roof is collected into two cisterns in the basement, filtered and used for the toilet and laundry water as well as to be used as a heat sink for all of the kitchen appliances.

Saunders Architecture created a building that is a fine example of beauty and sustainability but while it explores issues of locality and heritage within architectural design. The Fogo Island Inn connects with its surrounding territory in a subtle, refined and respectful way, making itself a timeless structural addition to the landscape.
