Bowstring Truss House by Works Partnership Architecture

Works Partnership Architecture completed the Bowstring Truss House, in Oregon, Portland; they have designed an exemplary private residence and studio that was adapted from a 5,000 sq. feet former warehouse and auto repair shop.

The residence features a space that is clear-spanned by a series of five bowstring trusses and exposed roof framing.  The architectural concept behind this design was to maintain intact the vast trussed ceiling and the open floor plane; at the same time, the architects successfully incorporated a residential program that the client could live among.

The Bowstring House demonstrates the alluring effect of integrating two different scales, while the two become one and eventually form one consistent program.

In this residence, one identifies the sense of the expanse of the entire structure that creates an open, airy atmosphere as well as scaled discreet living areas – a new environment, a simplified terrain between the earth and the sky.

Works Partnership Architects developed a design strategy to insert the program into the shell in a loose arrangement of ‘boxes’.

Yet, the overall experience of the space gives a sense of ‘whole’, while all design elements in this house seem to work together in harmony and most importantly they do not compete with the stunning, recognizable order of the roof.

The residence features a series of open, comfortable dwelling territories for the owner to live and work while a free pattern of new skylights creates a constellation of light and discreet pools of sun.

However, the highlight of the beauty of this residence lies in its exact center. A courtyard aligns the ground-scape with the roof-scape and forms a ‘vitrine of nature’, a minimal garden that suggests effortless sophistication along with an ethereal feel. A feel that is undeniably empowered by the smooth and fine material palette featured in the spaces make this house an excellent paradigm of contemporary residential architecture.
