They worked with the existing footprint of the building to expand this brewery which required new production facilities to make hops beer, therefore  they designed a home for eight 12.2-meter-tall fermentation tanks in this century-old building.

The project’s design was shaped by important facts related to the brewing process such as that the space needed to be accessible at all hours so staff could monitor and add ingredients to the ales.

Another key element of the design process that eventually formed the building was the underground river that runs below the northwest corner of the building. The slicing of the tower volume to run parallel to the underground river eventually created a wall of north-facing glass which opens up views of the facility and engages southbound traffic emerging from under a rail overpass.

Consequently a steel-framed glass box perched on top of the original building which was shaded by a perforated screen of corrugated aluminum.

The glass box is covered with vertical mesh panels in order to reduce heat gain on the southwest and northeast façade, while still allowing views of the tanks, which are especially visible when illuminated at night.

The outcome is a light and delicate glass box that seems to float above the existing brick building. With the application of an exemplary material palette where old  brick walls meet the fragility and transparency of glass volumes that are topped with a veil of mesh panels, this extension evokes refinement and elegance with an appropriate  hint of roughness.
