Árborg House by PK Arkitektar

PK Arkitektar designed a vacation house on the banks of the Hvita River, east of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. The residence is located on a moss-covered hill with a view over a quiet bend in the glacier formed river.

The building is organized as a sequence of events; a captivating journey between the natural and the built, where architecture becomes part of the landscape and vice versa. One approaches the house from the top of the hill; from the entrance porch through the closed courtyard into the living room and out onto the terrace at the end.

The Árborg House features a series of open, interconnected spaces which free the human flow in the house while providing efficient and atmospheric dwelling territories for the residents to enjoy.  All living, dining, kitchen and master bedroom are arranged in one continuous room, enabling panoramic views of the river and the distant mountains to the west.

While interior spaces evoke a smooth feeling, the roughness of the exterior façade contradicts with the internal smoothness suggested by the warmth untreated teak floors a ceilings and the silky, fair-faced concrete walls.

The residence’s exterior features light grey fair-faced concrete; this unique broken façade is created with the use of gravel from the riverbed which is blended into the concrete. This resulted to the formation of an abrasive and linear set of surfaces, which harmonizes the outside walls with the moss of the surrounding landscape while it complements the austere beauty of Icelandic topography.

Moreover, PK Arkitektar used the leftover moss from the footprint of the house to cover the residence roof as it was kept aside and regularly nursed during the building process, before being reinstalled on the roof. Doors and terraces are clad with teak boards that will gradually weather to a color grade to match the seasonal moss and the broken concrete surface.

This is a building which is designed to respond well to the local territory and the unique climatic conditions of the area; a house that demonstrates an impeccable sense of belonging and intents to weather gracefully.
