10 Hanover St. by Squire and Partners

Squire and Partners has completed a slender apartment building on London’s Hanover Street, featuring signature full height bespoke perforated shutters that define the building’s façade and its relationship with the surrounding urban territory.  The building forms part of a mixed-use development which also provides a new office building and the Hus Gallery of contemporary art.

The project is located in a London neighborhood that demonstrates a long and unique historic past; from 1800 to 1930 Hanover Street was the home of military tailoring. Squire and Partners were inspired by rich local heritage which subsequently influenced the design and craft found in the detail of the building. The architects incorporated in the new design a series of reinterpretations of the past while they created a contemporary and elegant residence that reveals an exemplary sense of belonging.

A chevron motif that used to perforate the façade is now abstracted from military insignia and combined with traditional military colors, while  the shutters are a contemporary reference to traditional timber shutters used in Mayfair residences to provide privacy and light modulation.

Spanning the width of the building, the shutters can be fully opened and closed forming a dynamic frontage to the street while they assist with environmental control. When closed the bronze shutters allow light to permeate through displaying the chevron pattern, and when open reveal flashes of red lining and gold trim.
